Gabrielle Marlow
Art has always been a part of my life; until recently, I was focusing mainly on traditional art, painting horses, pets, and animals as well as landscapes, still lives and florals. I have always had a tremendous love and fascination for surface pattern design.
Two years ago, I came across some very good online courses in digital illustration and surface pattern design. Now, I am fully immersed in creating designs for fabric. They are used in fashion and home décor, it’s wonderful.
Fairy Wren Sketches
The Southern Highlands, NSW is the place I call home. Living and working from home in Balmoral Village I am surrounded by nature, my inspiration. I can walk into the bush or the garden, pick flowers and draw them. Or I photograph them and return to my studio to paint. I then use them in a wide variety of surface pattern designs.

Gabrielle’s bushland inspiration from her walk
Australian Floral with Red Bottlebrush
I love drawing and painting and using pure paint pigments. I use a real painting as my initial design. Art on paper. I pick flowers on walks in nature or photograph flowers, plants, foliage, insects, birds, and other animals to use as inspiration. There is nothing quite like being outside and immersing oneself in nature to get truly inspired.
Handpicked botanical collection
Kangaroos, Tiny Fairy Wrens and Springtime
I use an ordinary pencil for the initial sketch or drawing on paper, then watercolour paints on artist quality paper. Sometimes I work in oils and pen and wash as well. It just depends on what I feel like doing and what it is for. Some of my best artworks are scanned, digitised, and made into illustrations and repeat surface pattern designs though!

We couldn’t be more excited to announce that our next featured artist of The Designer Project will be none other than the absolutely delightful Gabrielle Marlow!
Gabrielle is based in the Southerland Highlands of NSW. She loves drawing and painting and using pure paint pigments to create her beautiful designs, as well as working with oils and pen and wash as well. We love how she takes inspiration from everything around her; picking flowers on walks in nature or photographing flowers, plants, foliage, insects, birds, and other animals.
Her ‘Natures Garden’ collection was inspired by everything around her; picking flowers on walks in nature or photographing flowers, plants, foliage, insects, birds, and other animals. This range features beautiful Australian floral motifs with a couple floral designs taking inspirations from some classic Indian inspired florals
Keep reading to find out more about Gabrielle Marlow’s wonderful designs, which are all available in our Fabric Shop now!

Australian Floral with Red Bottlebrush
Bright and cheerful red bottle brush and sweet pink wax flowers and foliage on a beige background. There are single pinkish white wax flowers as well as little wax flower sprigs with buds. It has lovely soft grey green foliage with little brown berries that bring this Australian wildflower design together on a soft light beige background.
This design would make some amazing statement cushions that are sure to bring character and colour to your home!

Australian Springtime Bush Flower
Inspired by bushwalks and nature study sketches as well as the classic Millefleur designs from the Arts and Crafts movement. This design features sweet small springtime flowers: Flannel Flowers, Pink Boronia, Yellow Paper daisies and more.
This design as bedsheets…yes please! We think it would be great for any bedding projects and even some fashion garments, perhaps a fancy dress or a lovely little skirt.

Bright and bold Australian Floral
An Australian floral design with red Waratahs, red Bottlebrush, and lots of pink and cream coloured dainty native flora in an Ogee Classic design on a rich dark red. Surrounded by Ogee shaped floral chains with sweet wax flowers creating a rich and joyful Australian wildflower design.
We think this is such an excellent print for Home and Interior projects. Imagine this on some statement curtains!

Kangaroos, tiny Fairy Wrens and Springtime
Vintage style Australian flora and fauna design features watercolour paintings of kangaroos and springtime wildflowers on a soft pale yellow. There are also some cute little fairy wrens dotted around this design.
This design would work so well for fashion garments, especially pyjamas! This printed on our Cotton Poplin and turned into some adorable pyjamas? We think yes.

Pink Flannel Flowers
Pink flannel flowers only flower after extreme heat from fires and Gabrielle created this design to celebrate the regeneration and beauty of nature coming back after the bushfires. It’s a deliciously pink floral design, quite loose and sketchy with soft greens to complement the flowers.
Pink flannel flowers would just be so lovely as any and all fashion garments! A beautiful flowy dress or a cute little top.

Colourful Indian Floral
This bright and detailed Classic Indian floral design is full of many rich warm colours. There are lots of different flowers and leaves that Gabrielle said were so delightful to draw, paint and use for this design which is classic and yet playful at the same time.
We think this would be the perfect print for fashion projects! Can’t you just imagine this on a beautiful linen set?

Dainty Indian Floral
Another beautiful Indian Floral is such a colourful and warm design with dainty stylised flowers. It features tiny flowers in Blue and Gold scattered around on a rich coral red background.
How amazing look this design look as some kidswear? Even some cute bed sheets for the little ones!

It’s been such a treat sharing these beautifully unique designs by designer Geneva Richards, who’s based in our home town of Sydney’s Inner-West. We hope that you’ve enjoyed her designs as much as we have!
To coincide with Geneva’s “Assortment of Life” collection being made available to all of our customers through our Fabric Shop online, the artist herself has put together a guest blog which further explains her one of a kind approach to creating surface patterns and what inspires her work.
Keep reading to find out more about Geneva Richards and her wonderful prints!

‘Geneva Richards’
Hello! My name is Geneva and I’m the illustrator behind Studio Geneva. I’m so thrilled to be a part of the Designer Project!
I only discovered the world of surface design in 2020 during my pandemic career shift into illustration and design. A creative career is always something I wanted and I also love writing; so I took an extremely broad degree at university, studying communications where I explored visual and digital communications as well as public relations, advertising and marketing. I worked in the public relations industry for a few years in beauty and tech before shifting my focus back to my true love – design – in 2020.

‘April Showers – design in progress’
For my personal work, I like to take a prompt from my list of popular motifs and create a pattern based on the prompt. This helps me just start a design and focus on creating without worrying about the result. Building an exciting collection of books about design and illustration, as well as folders of inspirational images I’ve gleaned from the internet, and even scraps of paper from magazines or wrapping paper all help me to make my design decisions (I like to think of myself a collector of ideas but really, I am a trash goblin)

‘Design notes + details’
When designing for a client, I explore inspiration, moodboards, colours, motifs and collections before drafting ideas and beginning the pattern design process.
My actual design process is probably best described as ‘chaotic’. I’d love to say that there’s a specific way that I make patterns but there just isn’t! Sometimes I sketch motifs in a sketchbook, sometimes I make a digital sketch, sometimes I just throw some shapes around and see what I like. Sometimes I decide what colours to use in advance, and sometimes I change my mind 30 times. I take the time to explore different ideas and programs in my projects in order to create striking patterns and designs.
‘Kitty Kats Cushion Mock-Up’
I mainly sketch either by hand in a sketchbook or on Procreate on my ipad. I use Photoshop to re-colour and arrange my textured raster patterns, or I colour my designs on Adobe Fresco before transporting them to Illustrator. I use Affinity Designer to create seamless repeat patterns right on my iPad. Depending on where the mood takes me, I might use one or two, or all of these programs for a single project!
‘Magical Unicorns Sketches’
For me, surface design is about creating, expressing and exploring rather than the result. I hope you enjoyed this peek behind the curtain!

It’s come that time again to introduce our newest feature artist in The Designer Project and we are so excited to announce that the amazing Geneva Richards will be our designer for the month of April!
Her style is strong, feminine but not bold or girly which you can clearly see in her ‘Assortment of Life’ Collection She is drawn to bright colours, animals and motifs that make her happy, and surrounds herself with things that inspire her. She finds inspiration everywhere and anywhere, from her rural upbringing in New Zealand, charismatic Australian birds, dreamy colour palettes, iconic retro wallpaper or even an interesting texture.
Each of Geneva’s designs can be printed onto any of our fabrics, which means you can order custom designer fabric that’s tailored to you. Keep reading to find out more about Geneva Richards beautifully unique designs!

‘Howdy Partner’ was mainly inspired by Lady Gaga’s album Joanne – hence the sparkles! Geneva wanted to go all out cheesy retro cowgirl and we love it!
We think ‘Howdy Partner’ would make the funkiest furniture, perhaps it will be your next statement armchair?

‘April Showers’ is something a bit delicate while still maintaining Geneva’s signature bold lines with a lot of texture. Each leaf and flower was drawn using Procreate’s scribbly pencil brushes before turning it into a repeat.
‘April Showers’ would work perfectly for any and all fashion DIY projects or even upholstery.

‘Honey Bee’ is inspired by delicate florals imagined with an almost cartoonish line art. The idea was for the bees to be a bit unexpected and quirky so the design stands out amongst a floral arrangement.
We would love to see ‘Honey Bee’ as a super sweet pyjama set or even some kidswear!

‘Just Bananas’ started as some scribbled up rough banana shapes – and I mean scribbled! This design was made completely in Affinity Designer and we think the messy and free process really comes through in the finished design.
We think ‘Just Bananas’ would work perfectly for bedding and blankets. Snuggling up with some cool bananas on a cold day!

‘Tiger Queen’ features the tiger motif which was one of Geneva’s very first illustrations and he’s become part of her signature style – he has appeared as a print, in patterns and even re-imagined as a leopard! We love how it’s been paired with some beautifully simple leaf motifs.
We think ‘Tiger Queen’ an amazing design that can work for such a range of projects, whether it be a stylish pair of pants or some new cushions for your home.

‘Magical Unicorns’ started as a loose sketch before being digitised in Adobe Fresco and made into a pattern using Illustrator. Full of smooth, graceful shapes and dreamy pinks and purples, accessorised with a punchy yellow so it appeals to your inner child without being too ‘my little pony-ish’
‘Magical Unicorns’ is such a dream design for all kids projects! Some fun new clothes perhaps? Or maybe some adorable curtains for their bedrooms.

‘Retro Blooms’ is a wonderful exploration of lilac with a bit of an unexpected pairing of yellow which provides a fun contrast. The shapes are directly influenced by ugly retro wallpaper of yesteryear. It’s a bit of a merge between trendy modern colours and retro shapes and the simplicity makes the juxtaposition work.
We love how ‘Retro Blooms’ can work for a range of different projects, both fashion and home!

‘Kitty Kats’ features an array of adorable cat heads! These cats started as vector blobs which were then given ears and silly little faces to turn them into cats. Each shape is a little wonky and Geneva wanted to give them wonky colours as well so they have a fun cartoon feel and a little bit abstract!
We think ‘Kitty Kats’ would look so cute as some cozy pyjamas or even a funky fun dress. It would also look adorable as a lovely warm blanket or bedding!

All of our project ideas above are suggestions only as the sky’s truly the limit with Geneva’s stunning ‘Assortment of Life’ collection! Each of Geneva’s designs can be found in our Fabric Shop, so head on over and elevate your next DIY project!

‘Amy Jessup’
Hi, I’m Amy from Midnight Rise Design. I’m a Textile and Surface Designer based on the beautiful Gold Coast. I love exploring Australia in our van. Life on the road, immersing in our stunning landscape and living simply is most definitely for me.
Oh, and I’m obsessed with my Whippet Luna! My sleepy, sassy gal is in the studio with me daily!

‘Original Illustrations and Paintings’
I’m super excited to join the Digital Fabrics team with my collection now available in their fabric store! When I first saw Digital Fabrics, I was instantly drawn to the beautiful idea. Allowing artists, small business owners and creative minds to connect on a platform full of unique designs, high quality fabrics and no limitations. Ahhmazing!

‘Zephyr – Rust’
This collection is inspired by everything and anything vintage. I have always been drawn to vintage homes, swimwear and furniture. I would say my style is a modern twist on vintage concepts. My studio is my favourite room in the house! It’s my inspiration and motivation every day. I truly believe having a space which makes you feel light and excited to take on the day is so important.

‘Wild Daisie in progress’
Every collection starts with a mood board. My most exciting ideas are sparked when I’m completely relaxed and present. Whether that be when we’ve been traveling around in our van, laying by the beach or it could have been something I’ve seen on my morning walk. I am an organised, list writing, non-clutter kind of gal – Haha! So, Pinterest boards are my go-to (I’m obsessed!). This is one of my latest boards. A mix of colour inspiration, textures, travel pics. Let your mind run wild when creating your next mood board. Anything that feels good, add it!

‘Wild Daisie’
I’m a little bit of a creative mixer, I love all styles! Sometimes I design starting with sketches, other times I’ll dive straight into digital and even explore with watercolour and acrylic paint.
Whichever way I begin a design. The original artwork is scanned into Photoshop or Illustrator. I love that the options are endless and you can work so freely here. Original artwork is fine turned, colour pallets are explored and a seamless pattern is created.

‘Amy in her studio’
While my designs are created in different forms of art. They are suitable for fashion, baby wear and homewares.

Amy’s ‘House of Vintage’ collection is full of balanced designs using a mixture of different mediums and we’re so excited to have them all available in our Fabric Shop!

‘Mimi’ is such a bubbly, feminine print. It was created with the vision to be raw, created by sketches to keep every wiggle and bump as a personal touch. It features a divine contrast of navy and baby pink with slight shadowing.
‘Mimi’ is such a perfect print for fashion accessories like tote bags or scarves!

‘Posie Citrus’ is a fun, zesty and alternative floral print. Designed in a soft and summery colour palette makes for a versatile design.
We think ‘Posie’ would look absolutely adorable for swimwear!

‘Wild Daisie’ is a warm loving print, the details were inspired by vintage Botanics and bloomed in an Autumn pallet. If you desire to add warmth to your products, Wild Daise is for you.
‘Wild Daisie’ is just the perfect print for any fashion garment, we can picture how beautiful it would look as a long flowing dress.

‘Chic Slither’, where Terrazzo and leopard collide. This balanced design is layered in natural browns. We love this minimal animal print inspired design and think it would work well for both fashion garments as well as home and interior DIY projects!

‘Zephyr’ is a watercolour design that puts a vintage twist on a classic animal print. Make a statement with ‘Zephyr Rust’ with this warm and powerful colour pallet or for more of subtle statement, there’s ‘Zephyr Stone’; full of Soft, elegant and earthy tones.
We think these prints would make the most beautiful bedding or blankets!
The possibilities are endless with Amy’s ‘House of Vintage’ collection and we hope the above suggestions have helped get the ideas flowing! Each of Amy’s gorgeous designs can be found in our Fabric Shop with the minimum order for printing just 1m!

Amanda Laing
I’m Amanda Laing, a surface pattern designer from Brisbane, Qld. My inspiration comes from my surroundings whether they be the natural world or the built environment. I am always finding things that catch my eye and love to express it visually through colour, form and pattern.

“Rosie – Watercolour Painting”
With a background in Interior Design and Art teaching I design surface patterns for both paper and fabric. Paprly is my small business designing for wrapping paper, gift cards and tea towels.

“Eloide + Pink Petal Gouache Paintings”
I teach art workshops in primary schools and just completed a graduate certificate in visual arts. I also have a background in commercial Interior Design and Art Teaching. When it comes to surface pattern design, I’m pretty much self-taught and constantly being driven by the need to design and make things.

“Daisy Drop – Fabric Design”
Personally, I prefer hand drawing to digital and use a wide range of media from pen, watercolour, gouache and paint. Experimenting with textures and layering is also something that I love, as well as experimenting with different mediums. As a result, my style is wide and varied. My designs are both naïve and realistic prints but always with the aim of trying to create unique and original work.
You can check out more of Amanda’s work via her Instagram @mandalouau or view all of her lovely products on her website https://www.paprly.com.au/

It’s that time again where we introduce our newest feature artist in The Designer Project and we are so excited to announce that the wonderful Amanda Laing will be our designer of the month! Amanda loves to express things visually through colour, form and pattern. Her approach to her designs is organic, being inspired by the world around her. She hand-draws all of her designs, using a wide range of media from pen, watercolour, gouche and paint.
Amanda’s “Garden of Memories” collection was very much a collection inspired by her childhood memories of the garden, which was her favourite place to be. She would spend hours playing outside, in her own world, observing, sampling and imagining from the natural world around her; often creating weird posies out of just about anything that caught her eye. We are so thrilled that she has made a selection of her garden inspired designs available in our Fabric Shop!
Each of Amanda’s designs can be printed onto any of our fabric base cloths which means you can order custom designer fabric that’s tailored to you! Keep reading to find out more about Amanda Laing’s beautiful floral designs!

We would love to see “Daisy Drop” used for a summer dress or some loose flowy pants!

“Elodie” is a pretty little floral design with a warm colour palette of butterscotch and blush pink. It also has a few painted gold spots for extra sparkle hand painted in watercolour and gouache.
We think “Eloide” is such a delightful print for a lovely little dress to a pair of super cute pyjamas.

“Lace Mimosa” features a warm and spicy colour and is full of finely detailed, hand drawn floral and butterfly motifs. We think this would be perfect for a super cute summer dress!
“Lace Mimosa” would be great to use for some adorable bedding or other statement homewares.

“Petal Pink” is a sweet hand painted watercolour and gouache floral print in the prettiest of pinks with a pale pink background.
We think “Petal Pink” would be the perfect print for fashion garments like a long flowing skirt or kaftan.

“Rosie” pairs flowing hand painted watercolour florals against a deep, navy-blue background. We’re loving the contrast of the pinks in this design against the dark blues.
We would love to see “Rosie” used for statement cushion covers and tote bags!

“Rose Garden” is a delightful floral design with flower motifs in pink and gold tones. Each illustration hand painted with watercolour and gouache.
We think “Rose Garden” would be the perfect print for some beautiful napkins or a tablecloth, even perhaps some fashion accessories like ties and scarves.
All of our project ideas above are suggestions only as the sky’s truly the limit with Amanda’s beautiful collection! Each of Amanda’s designs can be found in our Fabric Shop, so head on over to be inspired for your next DIY project!
What a fantastic start Michaela Burgess’ feature has been for what’s now our third year of The Designer Project! Michaela is a multidisciplinary artist with a teaching position that enhances her professional design work with fine art practices. We’re so excited to have not just one, but two of her collections, “Bombay Mai Tai” and “Jungle Blue” available in our Fabric Shop. These designs are available to all of our customers as print-ready designs which can be printed onto any of our fabrics. We adore Michaela’s beautifully detailed designs and hope you’ve been as captivated by them as we have. As part of this feature the designer herself has put together a guest blog which we’ve posted below!

Michaela Burgess
Hi my name is Michaela Burgess and I’m really thrilled to be working with Digital Fabrics as part of The Designer Project and making these collections available for fabric printing. My early studies were in Object Art and Design, in both ceramics and glass and I’ve been teaching Visual Arts and Design for almost 20 years now. I balance teaching with creating my own work and have continued to exhibit throughout my career.

“Indigo Magnolia” cushion cover mock-up
I ventured into surface design in 2014. I love the process of surface design and seeing my work on a range of surfaces, especially fabrics – continually thrills me! One of my earliest memories is diving into my mother’s scarf bag, it was full of fabulous prints and fabrics from the 70’s, and creating wonderful wrap around creations for myself with her beautiful scarfs before going to a friend’s birthday party.

“Marigold Teal” blouse mock-up
I draw influence from the world around me and find that nature is a huge influence on my process. I use a range of techniques; hand-drawing, etching, printmaking and painting, to create the bases for my designs for fabrics. I then use Illustrator to bring the elements together and place into repeat.

“Taj Mahal Nude”
I’ve shown work at Premier Vision in Paris and Surtex in New York. From experiencing both of these events I truly believe Australian design is in a unique position on the world stage, in that it is fresh, dynamic and informed by Australian aesthetic sensibilities that allow it to hold its own in a first-class arena.

“Indigo Blue Vine” dress mock-up
After completing a Master’s of Cross Disciplinary Art and Design in 2015 with studies in Textiles, Fashion, Interior Design, Urban Design and Community Projects, I’ve got several projects coming to fruition over the next year so keep a look out for the updates. A hint on what’s to come: I’ll be using Digital Fabrics and having several designs printed on their gorgeous Dilly fabric! The print and fabric quality that you are able to access through Digital Fabrics is incredible.
You can find updates on Instagram @_michaelaburgess or my website!

“Bombay Mai Tai” collection day bed mock-up

To kick things off for the year we’re introducing you all to the ultra-talented artist and designer Michaela Burgess! Michaela works across a variety of mediums and has qualifications in ceramics, glass and object design. In 2015 she completed a Masters of Interdisciplinary Art and Design with a focus on textiles, fashion, urban design and community projects. Michaela’s designs feature vibrant colours and gorgeous textures, and have a unique Australian perspective which makes them feel effortlessly elegant.
Michaela’s most recent collections “Bombay Mai Tai” and “Jungle Blue” are beautiful dreamscapes to exotic, faraway lands, where wild jaguars and elephants roam through lush tropical leaves and the air is fragranced with spices and sweet fruits. What’s more is that the designer has made both of these collections available in our Fabric Shop online and we couldn’t be more thrilled! Each of Michaela’s designs can be printed onto any of our stock fabrics, and with minimum orders of just 1m, custom designer fabric is accessible for even the smallest of DIY projects. Below we’ve shared a bit about each of Michaela’s incredible designs and the different types of projects we think they’d be perfect for!
“Bombay Mai Tai”
“Chameleons” draws inspiration from imaginary travels along silk road trading routes. The design is available in two gorgeously warm colourways; “Sand” and “Earth”
We would love to see “Chameleons” used for custom upholstery projects!

“Marigold” is an Art Deco influenced design with wonderfully decorative marigold motifs. The design is available in two colourways; the statement making “Teal” and the beautifully warm “Clay”.
“Marigold” would be perfect for a wide leg jumpsuit or a co-ordinating fashion set.

“Elephants” shows elephants taking their annual journey down the ancient pathways of their ancestors. The overlapping elements give the design a beautiful dreamlike quality. The design is available in two colourways; “Sand” and “Blue”.
“Elephants” would be fantastic to use for men’s summery linen shirts!

“Taj Mahal” layers intricate lace motifs and Art Deco elements to create a delicate print which is truly stunning. “Taj Mahal” is available in two soft colourways; “Sand” and “Nude”.
“Taj Mahal” would be great to use for bikinis, ties and pocket squares!

“Jungle Blue”
“Indigo Blue Zebra” is a hand drawn design that evokes memories of exotic animal prints and tribal patterns. Clean white keeps the design fresh and balanced.
We would love to see “Indigo Blue Zebra” used for summer dresses, tableware and bedding.

“Jungle Blue” uses a minimalistic colour palette of indigo and white to provide a fresh take on jungle inspired textiles. The design features intricately drawn jungle cat and botanic motifs.
“Jungle Blue” is perfect for coastal inspired fashion and homewares!

“Indigo Blue Paisley” features hand-drawn elements to create the paisley shapes, which are also reminiscent of block printing.
“Indigo Blue Paisley” would be a gorgeous design to use for upholstery projects and bedding.

“Indigo Blue Vine” uses the motif of a vine to create this lattice like pattern. The vines have a wonderfully rustic quality.
We think “Indigo Blue Vine” would be absolutely perfect for table linen that feels both understated and chic.

“Indigo Magnolia” features hand-drawn magnolia flowers in a richly detailed floral print. The design uses varying tones of blue to keep your eye wandering throughout!
“Indigo Magnolia” would be an excellent choice for men’s board shorts and summer shirts.

“White Magnolia” brings together the stylistic motifs found throughout the rest of the “Jungle Blue” collection. The white background keeps the design feeling light and fresh.
We would love to see “White Magnolia” used for swimwear and beach bags.

The possibilities are endless with Michaela’s “Bombay Mai Tai” and “Jungle Blue” collections and we hope the above suggestions have helped get the creative wheels turning! Each of Michaela’s designs are available to be printed onto any of our stock fabrics with the minimum order for printing just 1m!
