‘Assortment of Life’ Textile Collection by Geneva Richards

It’s come that time again to introduce our newest feature artist in The Designer Project and we are so excited to announce that the amazing Geneva Richards will be our designer for the month of April!

Her style is strong, feminine but not bold or girly which you can clearly see in her ‘Assortment of Life’ Collection She is drawn to bright colours, animals and motifs that make her happy, and surrounds herself with things that inspire her. She finds inspiration everywhere and anywhere, from her rural upbringing in New Zealand, charismatic Australian birds, dreamy colour palettes, iconic retro wallpaper or even an interesting texture.

Each of Geneva’s designs can be printed onto any of our fabrics, which means you can order custom designer fabric that’s tailored to you. Keep reading to find out more about Geneva Richards beautifully unique designs!

‘Howdy Partner’ was mainly inspired by Lady Gaga’s album Joanne – hence the sparkles! Geneva wanted to go all out cheesy retro cowgirl and we love it!

We think ‘Howdy Partner’ would make the funkiest furniture, perhaps it will be your next statement armchair?

Project_Geneva Richards_Howdy Partner

‘April Showers’ is something a bit delicate while still maintaining Geneva’s signature bold lines with a lot of texture. Each leaf and flower was drawn using Procreate’s scribbly pencil brushes before turning it into a repeat.

‘April Showers’ would work perfectly for any and all fashion DIY projects or even upholstery.

‘Honey Bee’ is inspired by delicate florals imagined with an almost cartoonish line art. The idea was for the bees to be a bit unexpected and quirky so the design stands out amongst a floral arrangement.

We would love to see ‘Honey Bee’ as a super sweet pyjama set or even some kidswear!

Digital Fabrics_Designer Project_Geneva Richards_Honey Bee

‘Just Bananas’ started as some scribbled up rough banana shapes – and I mean scribbled! This design was made completely in Affinity Designer and we think the messy and free process really comes through in the finished design.

We think ‘Just Bananas’ would work perfectly for bedding and blankets. Snuggling up with some cool bananas on a cold day!

Digital Fabrics_Designer Project_Geneva Richards_Just Bananas

‘Tiger Queen’ features the tiger motif which was one of Geneva’s very first illustrations and he’s become part of her signature style – he has appeared as a print, in patterns and even re-imagined as a leopard! We love how it’s been paired with some beautifully simple leaf motifs.

We think ‘Tiger Queen’ an amazing design that can work for such a range of projects, whether it be a stylish pair of pants or some new cushions for your home.

Digital Fabrics_Designer Project_Geneva Richards_Tiger Queen

‘Magical Unicorns’ started as a loose sketch before being digitised in Adobe Fresco and made into a pattern using Illustrator. Full of smooth, graceful shapes and dreamy pinks and purples, accessorised with a punchy yellow so it appeals to your inner child without being too ‘my little pony-ish’

‘Magical Unicorns’ is such a dream design for all kids projects! Some fun new clothes perhaps? Or maybe some adorable curtains for their bedrooms.

‘Retro Blooms’ is a wonderful exploration of lilac with a bit of an unexpected pairing of yellow which provides a fun contrast. The shapes are directly influenced by ugly retro wallpaper of yesteryear. It’s a bit of a merge between trendy modern colours and retro shapes and the simplicity makes the juxtaposition work.

We love how ‘Retro Blooms’ can work for a range of different projects, both fashion and home!

Digital Fabrics_Designer Project_Geneva Richards_Retro Blooms

‘Kitty Kats’ features an array of adorable cat heads! These cats started as vector blobs which were then given ears and silly little faces to turn them into cats. Each shape is a little wonky and Geneva wanted to give them wonky colours as well so they have a fun cartoon feel and a little bit abstract!

We think ‘Kitty Kats’ would look so cute as some cozy pyjamas or even a funky fun dress. It would also look adorable as a lovely warm blanket or bedding!

All of our project ideas above are suggestions only as the sky’s truly the limit with Geneva’s stunning ‘Assortment of Life’ collection! Each of Geneva’s designs can be found in our Fabric Shop, so head on over and elevate your next DIY project!

Tanya Freitas – The Designer Project

2021 for The Designer Project has been truly incredible, and being just the second year for the initiative, we cannot wait for all the amazing artist features that will be in store in 2022. To wrap up this year’s series we’ve been sharing the gorgeous work of Surface Pattern Designer Tanya Freitas and what a showcase it’s been! The Sydney-based designer creates beautifully rich and detailed designs, and has made a selection of her unforgettable florals available in our Fabric Shop. As part of Tanya’s feature, the designer herself has written a blog for us which we’ve shared below! The guest blog covers off Tanya’s workspace, background and typical design process. Keep reading to find out more about Tanya and her captivating designs!

Tanya Freitas

Hey everyone, I’m Tanya and it’s so exciting to be part of this The Designer Project! A textile designer by trade, I currently own and run Wild Coral Design, a boutique studio specialising in contemporary print and surface design. I live in the beautiful harbour city of Sydney, with my hubby and two little kiddos who keep me super busy but are also my reason for pursuing my dream of working freelance so I can be there for all the drop-offs, pick-ups and tantrums in between!

“Parkes”

Today I’m excited to open up the (virtual) doors to my studio and share with you snippets of my creative process, inspiration & workspace as well chat about my collection of prints now available with Digital Fabrics. Yay!

Tanya’s home studio

I work out of one half of the spare room in our home (my hubby has the other corner)! It has the best natural light and I’m forever grateful for this space! I keep my work area pretty tidy, however it often features several notebooks, planners, reference books and multiple cups of tea I’ve been drinking throughout the day. In case you’re wondering – I’m a 100% English Breakfast with milk kinda girl!

One of Tanya’s works-in-progress

I like to think of my creative aesthetic as ‘Contemporary with an Ethnic Heart’. I grew up in India so the art, architecture and colour of that part of the world is a constant source of inspiration when it comes to my designs. I often like looking ‘back’ on Art history movements to draw on motif and pattern inspiration and of course you’ll rarely see a print without a floral in my collections!

“Rosetta”

My process is 100% digital these days. My beloved iPad pro, iMac and Photoshop are my creative best mates and I love that I can use technology to create art that still retains that imperfect, hand rendered quality I’m always aiming for.

Tanya designing

The ‘Ditsy Boheme’ collection of prints is a reflection of my love for florals, warm colours all featuring that ever present, ethnic flair while ‘Nowhere but Home’ is a project born out of the pandemic lockdown, inspired by neighbourhood walks and my 5K surrounds we were allowed to explore.

“Carlotta”

As much as I love prints and fabric, I’ve never really persisted long enough at a sewing machine to master it but it’s always my dream to see my prints made up into beautiful products for fashion or home. Thanks to Digital Fabrics, I’m hoping this collection finds its place in the hearts of many talented sewers who can give life to my little drawings and create products to keep forever.  So, with all these prints ready to be snapped up from the DF Fabric Shop and with minimums of only 1m, you can’t go wrong! I can’t wait to see what you create.

“Ditsie”

It’s been a pleasure to chat with you and I so appreciate that you’ve made it to the end of this post 🙂 I’d love to keep in touch and see what you do with my fabric, so please feel free to tag me and Digital Fabrics in all your sewing adventures! Instagram is home to all the latest in the Wild Coral world and you can follow along here @wild_coral or head over to my website, if you’d like to see more of what I do and get to know me a bit better!

See you around soon,

Tanya x

Next up as our feature artist in The Designer Project is self-taught artist, photographer, and surface pattern designer Lauren Powell! Lauren is based in the gorgeous Southern Highlands, NSW and creates her designs under the studio name Lozzie Eliza Designs. Lauren has been creative for as long as she remembers, with her design journey truly beginning towards the end of high school as she began utilizing online art classes which helped her develop key digital skills for creating digital artwork and surface pattern designs.

Lauren creates designs which feature crisp graphic artwork and are often influenced by nature and the everyday. We’re so excited to have Lauren take part in The Designer Project which includes a range of her designs being made available in our Fabric Shop online. The designer’s “Home Sweet Home” collection is inspired by her life living on a semi-rural property, with each design available to be printed onto any of our stock fabrics. Below we’ve shared a little bit about each of Lauren’s designs, including their background and the types of DIY projects we think they’d be perfect for. Keep reading to find out more about Lauren’s “Home Sweet Home” collection!

“Painted Tartan” is inspired by Spring days spent by a dam painting pop art style geometric shapes and is also a nod to Lauren’s Scottish heritage. The design was originally a watercolour painting which has been digitally refined to create this print-ready design.

We think “Painted Tartan” is a really versatile geometric print that could work across fashion and homewares. We’re already imagining it used for tailored garments, small accessories and cushion covers.

“Wild Grasses” is inspired by the beautiful, swaying grasses which surrounds Lauren’s property; where horses roam and kangaroos warm under the sun. The design is available in two gorgeous colourways, “Emerald” and “Rainbow”.

“Wild Grasses” would be a great design to use for hair ties and hair scarves, cosmetic pouches and camisoles.

“Folksy Floral” is a homage to Lauren’s grandmother who use to paint beautiful folk art pieces. “Folksy Floral” is a contemporary rendering of classic folk art and features a playful colour palette of greens, pinks and lavenders.

We would love to see “Folksy Floral” used for pocket squares, kids wear and cushion covers.

“Oranges and Lemons” is inspired by Lauren picking fresh citrus grown on her farm, sharing the fruit with their chooks and baking sweet lemon meringue pies when the weather gets cooler. This design perfectly balances the bright colours of the fruit with a soft, sage background.

“Oranges and Lemons” is a perfect print for fun applications, such as swimwear, kids wear and dog bandanas!

All of our ideas above are suggestions only as we hope to inspire you and your next DIY project! Each of the design’s in Lauren’s “Home Sweet Home” collection can be found in our Fabric Shop online and can be printed onto any of our stock fabrics. Simply choose the design + the base cloth + the metres required. It’s that easy!
