Meet the Designer – Kristen Baldwin

Welcoming the talented Kristen Baldwin as our next featured artist in The Designer Project – along with her wonderful fabric collection ‘Calm with a Hint of Spice’!  

To coincide with Kristen’s fabrics being available in our Fabric Shop, she has also put together a guest blog which shares some background information about the artist herself, the inspiration for the collection and how Kristen likes to work creatively. Kristen Baldwin

Hello lovely people, 

I’m Kristen Louise – a newbie to the design industry – and I am humbled and very excited to have a selection of my designs chosen to be in the Digital Fabrics shop. 

Design Work in Progress

I grew up in that eclectic decade called the 1980’s and I absolutely loved it when pastels and nature became prominent. I remember walking through a display home at the time where the walls were painted in pastel pink and there was a gorgeous pastel and muted blue, floral frieze that was not quite halfway up the wall and wrapped its way around the room – just beautiful! As you may have guessed, I love working with pastel and muted tones, that will bring a sense of calm to you and your home. 

Brush Strokes & Drawings

My inspiration, like a lot of designers, can be found in nature – both flora and fauna. I also receive inspiration and/or patterns through my dreams and my grandchildren are often a fun source for inspiring creativity. I also love to decorate my space with little “pretties” – some have been made by me, some have been given to me and some I have collected because I love the aesthetic appeal they have. 

Colour Blends

My work is created through a little bit of painting, drawing/sketches, photography and scanning but much of my work is directly created in Adobe Illustrator as I love being able to achieve instant results – no drying time! Something I have on my “to-do-list” is to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to create repeat patterns.

 The ‘Calm with a Hint of Spice’ collection showcases delicate motifs that feature movement with a calm colour palette, mainly in neutrals and muted tones. We think this collection is such an all-rounder, working for both Fashion & Home projects.
