Meet the Designer – Laura Armitage Vella

Next up as our featured artist in The Designer Project is the wonderful Laura Armitage Vella from Monber and B Designs – with not one…but two textile collections ‘Sand in the Suitcase’ & ‘Winter Bunny’!  

As part of Laura’s feature, the designer has also put together a guest blog which details her typical creative process as well as the things that inspire her! Keep reading to find out more!

What a wonderful way to start the Winter Season, I’m so excited to be here to share some of my designs alongside the talented artist here at Digital Fabrics. 

Sometimes I get asked what I do for work and I think it’s not really work – it’s just so much fun! I have always worked creatively studying fashion and working as a fashion designer for over 10 years. Before that, I was the kid in high school who spent lunchtimes in the art studio classroom working on creations and in primary school swapping other kids’ fruit roll-ups for drawings of dolphins. So it’s no surprise that I’m here doing pattern design and illustration, it did take me a while to get the message though but I’m so glad I did. Now I’m thrilled I get to share two collections with you here, Sand in the Suitcase and Winter Bunny. 

Sand in the Suitcase Collection Sketches

My style of creating and coming up with ideas grows mostly in a very predictable order, I think after creating so many clothing ranges I find creative freedom in the predictability of order. I’m sharing a photo of both collections’ brainstorming pages – can you make sense of them? They are messy but the ideas come fast so I quickly jot down the feel of the collection, print ideas and names of each print.

I love working with photoshop but first I feel more flow working with pencil and paper and I like to play with the texture of paint and watercolour paper to get some saturated colour onto the page. I scan these into the computer and by this stage, the final print is really coming together in my mind and I wish sometimes I could work as fast as my imagination.

As I work on the colour and scale of the elements I’m thinking about what the fabric will become, and what will it best be sewn into. ‘Sail Away’ print I have always imagined this in a skirt or a shoestring cami. I’m really looking forward to sewing this idea up though I’m a very slow sewer it may take me a while but I’ll share this with you as soon as it is done. 

One of the most rewarding aspects of working in the creative industry is seeing how others interpret the patterns and what they will be created into. I would love to see what you would create with these prints or an idea you have if you would be ever so kind to share too.

The Sand in the Suitcase collection is a trip down memory lane for anyone who has holidayed by the sea. Laura’s childhood was filled with holidays by the beach, waking up and going straight from pj’s to swimmers in the morning. Time was lost in the sand, creating games, building sandcastles and looking up close at all the small pieces of broken shells. Walking along the beach collecting shells only to look back to where you came from, and it is just a blurry dot in the distance. Eventually, the time comes to go home and on unpacking, there are always grains of sand in the bottom of the suitcase. 

The Winter Bunny collection is inspired by the winter season – floating in the dreamy innocents of our little cherubs. This season is full of excitement and discovering pure joy for our winter wonderland. Crisp mornings delighting in finding the last of flowers. Winter Bunny, our elusive furry forest friend. If you are lucky, you’ll see a glimpse of his fluffy tail running across the field as the first light glitters on the dewy grass. 

These designs would be great for a range of both Fashion & Interior projects! We’re thinking sweet pyjama sets and flowing dresses, or perhaps some cute cushions for your home? ‘Spring Harvest’ Textile Collection by Nicole Wilton

For our latest installment of The Designer Project, we’ll be featuring the wonderful work of artist Nicole Wilton!  

Nicole Wilton is an Australian artist and surface designer. Born and raised in the country, her love of all things rural is reflected in hand-painted watercolour designs from her ‘Spring Harvest’ collection, inspired by everything the home paddock has to offer.  

‘Spring Harvest’ captures the abundance of goodness and joy we receive from our veggie patch and array of fruit trees. Vibrant, hand-painted watercolour, and playful patterns celebrate the hope and promise of Spring. There are loads of lemons, and carrots ready to be pulled. The snow peas are at their peak, with the happiest sea of green foliage. Planting out seeds, watching them grow, and then eating of the harvest straight from the tree – it doesn’t get much better than that! 

We think this collection would be absolutely perfect for a range of Fashion and Homeware projects! Think of stunning dresses and Tea Towels, Cushions and Table linens + many more – the sky is the limit.

What’s more fantastic is that the whole collection has been made available in our Fabric Shop online, meaning each of the designs can be printed onto any of our stock fabrics. Below we’ve shared a bit about each of the designs so keep reading! 

Loads of Lemons is a fresh and fruity print, with a slight vintage feel. Hand-painted in delicate watercolour, Loads of Lemons is playful yet elegant. A timeless and versatile design, there is no limit to what this delightful print can be used for. 

Yellow Stripes is hand-painted in delightful watercolour. These stunningly simple Yellow Stripes bring all the joy of a warm Spring day with a gentle breeze and is bound to brighten your day. 

Wilton & Co Posy was inspired by a dinnerware set which was gifted to Nicole for her wedding, It’s a simple and delicate pattern, using a single, hand-painted motif in gorgeous blue watercolour. 

Tossed Snow Peas is a little bit quirky, but oh so fresh. Inspired by veggies straight from the garden and a dinnerware set. Delightful blue motifs are scattered amongst vibrant, green snow peas, all hand-painted in stunning watercolour.  

Green Check is fresh and simple, made up of gorgeous green watercolour squares to create a classic print. This pattern works beautifully as a co-ordinate print or as a simple print to brighten your day. 

Heirloom Carrots is another hand-painted design, full of vibrant watercolour. Pulled straight from the garden to your next sewing project! A playful tossed pattern, that pairs perfectly in the kitchen, but don’t let that limit you.

‘My Hearts Garden’ Textile Collection by Susanna April

With a new season, brings a new featured designer of the month! We couldn’t be more excited to announce that our next featured artist of The Designer Project will be none other than the amazing Susanna April!

Susanna  is an intuitive abstract artist driven by emotion and feeling in her art practice. Her pieces are created from multi-layered acrylic artworks which sing with detail and depth. She lives in Brisbane, sunny QLD, with her two kiddos and husband and loves a good day at the beach.

Her ‘My Hearts Garden ’ collection is vibrant and full of colour, the perfect patterns to bring art to life in your textiles! What’s more fantastic is that the whole collection has been made available in our Fabric Shop online, meaning each of the designs can be printed onto any of our stock fabrics. Below we’ve shared a bit about each of the designs and the types of projects we think they’d be great for so keep reading! 

‘My Hearts Garden’ is a vibrant, fresh print with lots of detail, layering and brush strokes. It features pink brush strokes mixed together with teal and green.

‘Pink Terrazzo’ is a wonderfully detailed small scale print with clear brush strokes and abstract shapes. As you can probably tell by the name, this print has the sweetest pink colour palette.

‘Treasures Above’ is a wonderfully detailed small scale print with clear brush strokes and abstract shapes. We love the combination of Pink and Neutral shades in this design.

‘Gardens Alive’ is a vibrant, fresh print with lots of detail, layering and brush strokes. The design features wonderful shades of green and teal with pops of white.

‘Let the Heart Dance’ is a beautiful and vibrant multi-layered, pink abstract print created from an original acrylic painting on canvas. The detail of the brush strokes really make this design stand out!

‘Many Waters’ is a beautifully complex design created to captivate your eyes with its delicious swirling brush stroke, in this divine teal shade.

‘Many Waters’ would be amazing for a wide range of project; not only fashion garments but also home and interior projects such as Tea Towels!

‘Desert Dawn’ is a beautiful, neutral print layered with lots of brush stroke and paint detail. It’s colour palette is reminiscent of the desert with warm tones and soft pinks.

The cosy vibes of ‘Desert Dawn’ make it perfect for homewares such as cushion covers, blankets and bedding and maybe some fashion garments such as scarves!

Marie Schmitt – The Designer Project

We’ve absolutely adored sharing the beautifully detailed work of Sydney-based designer Marie Schmitt and hope you’ve loved her designs as much as we have! Maries designs are modern and elegant creations that are sure to delight. To coincide with Marie’s ‘Natural Wonder’ collection being made available to all of our customers through our Fabric Shop online, the artist herself has put together a guest blog which we’ve shared below! The blog takes a closer look at Marie’s creative process, detailing every step from initial sketch to final design. The blog also includes gorgeous photographs and process images which really help tell the story of Marie’s work and the ‘Natural Wonder’ collection. Hi, 

My name is Marie Maignan. Since I was a child, I loved to draw and I love nature. I developed my own style, drawing floral motifs with lines in different thickness and shape creating movement and elegance. 

I am born in France where I spend all my childhood. After a while living in Germany, I moved to Australia in Sydney with my family. The surrounding nature is fantastic source of inspiration. 

As an adult I really enjoyed again the pleasure of creation and drawing. It is such a magical moment.

My designs start as hand drawn illustrations, line by line, first with pencil, then with my beloved Waterman ink pen. This way of using the lines create elegant motives, all in finesse, simple but with its own movement. Modern, graphic and somehow fascinating. 

These were then scanned using a printer to create a digital version. Once I had the scans, I then opened them up in photoshop and got started on cleaning up the background. Pretty much just removing everything in the file except the drawn motifs.

Once everything was nice and cleaned up, I started working on the layout, copying and rearranging the motifs to create a nice flowing design. Once I had a layout that worked and that I liked, I cropped it so that each side joined up to the other so that it would be seamless when you repeated the tile.  

From here, I made all my colour edits, changing the background colour and colour of my illustrations.

I am very happy to be given the opportunity to valorize my drawings and patterns with Digital Fabrics. I was so delighted by the first design project I did which was a wonderful cushion, that I thought it was maybe time to do more with my drawings and share them through the Designer Project by Digital Fabric.

Our Pure Linen is a divine mid-weight 245GSM fabric that is 100% Linen, and has a maximum printable width of 145cm. This woven fabric has the loveliest linen slub texture and a vivid white base colour, that ensures good colour reproduction when printed. This is an ideal fabric for home and interior purposes such as cushion covers, table linen, creative signage & banners such as wedding signs and curtains.

When considering our Pure Linen for your next project please keep in mind that some fading after washing is normal for natural fabrics that have been used for digital printing. The fading often gives our printed natural fabrics a softer finish which suits the natural fibre itself. Fading can be minimized through the use of cold hand-washing and phosphate free detergent.

Carly Westbye -The Designer Project

We have absolutely loved sharing all of the amazing floral prints by artist Carly Westbye, and hope that you’ve enjoyed them as much as we have!

‘Carly Westbye’

I am honoured to share my art through Digital Fabrics and look forward to bringing more designs to this unique network of talented designers.

I am a Canberra-based designer and founder/owner of FinBok Publishing. I commenced my business as a Graphic Artist/Desktop Publisher and have spent the last eighteen years expanding on my design skills. My surface designs for interiors and fashion launched in 2016 and my designs have branched from collaborations, prints for personal use and expanding through to creators abroad in the textile industry.

We are often asked what drives our passion to create and generally speaking for myself, I gain much satisfaction viewing the appreciation of those who support my work. Sharing the love of art and bringing a smile is what speaks to me. I have been creative since I was a child and have also been fortunate to explore a number of art shows where I have been able to sell my paintings.

Most of my inspiration is drawn from nature and more recently I have spent some time observing my history and culture. I enjoy exploring nature’s contours, textures and colour palette. Together, I like to combine this with a variety of mediums, as I continue to explore new techniques and learn to work with organic materials sourced from Australian suppliers. I am currently working on many new designs to be released this year, all of which have been created using a unique self-taught technique.  This method combines natural pigments that I mix with inks and gel mediums. I find this to be a rewarding process to see my illustrations and paintings brought together, as I continue to develop on my seamless signature style.

The process in developing my designs will vary, depending on where I draw my inspiration from. Sometimes it begins with a walk in nature; other times a colour I am drawn to, a memory, or experience. My sketchbook is a big part of my life, and I never leave home without it. This is a journal that I hope will be treasured in my family for the years to come.

Each design is taken through a process that I have constructed over time. This process enables me to keep my designs on track during my creative thought process. My designs are structured with sketches, both initial and final stages, a colour selection process and consideration of purpose for print. All of my final designs are then imported to Adobe Creative Suite, where I then clean my files and prepare the layout for print production.

‘Morning Melodies’ Textile Collection by Gouri Babshet

It’s come that time again to introduce our newest feature artist in The Designer Project and we are so excited to announce that the amazing Gouri Babshet as our designer for the month of December! 

We are so lucky to have Gouri’s ‘Morning Melodies’ collection available in our Fabric Shop. ‘Morning Melodies’ is inspired by the nearby creeks and wetlands that are home to beautiful chirping birds, ducks, butterflies and the air filled with fresh fragrance of the lovely meadows. This collection is made up of hand drawn detailed delicate motifs with lots of texture and calming colours with a hint of feminine and vintage vibes that are perfect for apparels, home decor and various fabric products and accessories.

Chirping birds is a lovely print full of little birds and stunning florals! This design has a and fresh calming colour palette of blues and pinks against a white background. 

Chirping Birds would be the perfect print for kids projects such as baby swaddles and blankets and kids clothing too! 

 

Delightful Roses – Navy features a print full of detailed hand drawn roses and butterfly motifs. We love this combo of soft pinks and dark blues with that pop of light blue!

Morning Blooms consists of a variety of native Australian florals in a divine peach and blue colour palette. The scattered flow of the floral motifs make it such a versatile print.  

We think Morning Blooms is great for both fashion and home projects, think blankets and dresses!

Ducks is the Lake is a gorgeous print featuring the sweetest little family of ducks swimming in a calm Lake. The duck motifs are so adorable and look perfect with the blue ‘lake’ background.

Geometric butterflies is a blender pattern with butterfly motifs and tiny blooms arranged in geometric fashion. We are loving  the peachy tones of this print!

Ideas for your leftover Fabric Scraps

Whether you have been making your own garments for years, or are just starting out, there is nothing better than sitting back and admiring your finished works. Our brains get a kick out of engaging our artistic side, and getting creative helps release those feel-good endorphins. But, with any work of art there is always the clean-up part which can be a bit of a drag. And, if you’re anything like us you are probably wondering what you can re-use as opposed to throwing your custom fabrics straight into the bin. As proud supporters of the slow-fashion movement, we are big fans of limiting our carbon footprint in any way possible and fabric wastage is no different.

So instead of putting those fabric scraps into the bin, here is how you can re-use your fabrics to not only make some funky new creations, but also do your part to help break the wastage cycle.

Mesh Beach Bag

Summer is here and that means plenty of beach days, and this creation from Sew Simple Home  not only looks great but also keeps that pesky sand where it belongs. All you need is your spare fabrics, some matching thread and mesh fabric which you can buy online or at stores like Spotlight. The mesh allows you to store your items and simultaneously acts as a sift for any sand or dirt.

Scrap Busting Shorts

We hate to harp on but summer really is the DIY designer’s dream when it comes to quick and easy clothing and accessories. These shorts are a great project made by our friend & creator, Carly B using her leftover Digital Fabric Scraps (scroll to the bottom to read how)! and are perfect company with the mesh beach bag to go over any bikini bottom or one-piece.

HalfSoyBean has a terrific YouTube channel and with some matching thread you will be on your way to busting out some brand new, sustainably-made bottoms for those warmer months.

Scrap Key-Fobs

Keys – we all have them and we all easily lose them. How many minutes have you wasted trying to find the house keys, that letterbox key or your spare car key? Those days are long gone with Lo and Behold Stitchery’s scrap key-fob.

You can wave goodbye to tacky key rings or uninspiring lanyards and those smaller fabric scraps with some basic sewing supplies, clips and a basic key ring.  Be careful though, you may start getting requests from loved ones for one of their own, or better yet, they make a perfect present for that special someone who needs their keys permanently hung around their necks.

Homemade Heat Packs

Hoosier HomeMade are on the money with their homemade heat pack.

The beauty of this project is they have multiple uses outside of keeping warm in the colder months – where it be for nursing injuries, treating blocked pores or those time-of-the-month cramps. All you need for this little gem is your spare fabrics, matching thread and some long-grain rice and in no time you will have a funky little gift idea for the upcoming festive season.

A Merry Sustainable Christmas

On of our passion here at Digital Fabrics is sustainability and making it accessible in the fabrics industry. And it’s Christmas, so in the spirit of giving we love to share some clever ways to spread sustainability in a festive way.  

Christmas Wrapping with Fabric (Furoshiki)

In Australia alone we use more than 150,000km of wrapping paper over Christmas. That’s enough paper to wrap the planet nearly four times, which is far too much only to be discarded immediately after opening gifts! We’ve been adoring the art of Furoshiki that has been practiced in Japan for 1200 years with its distinctive style of fabric-wrapping. Furoshiki is a beautiful way to display thoughtfulness, as well as being eco-friendly. Here’s a great guide on Furoshiki wrapping. Or you might like to follow our DIY Beeswax Wrap tutorial, which is perfect for wrapping smaller presents. The terrific part about this is that the wrap can then be used to cover leftover food after Christmas lunch!

Homemade bon-bons

We love this stellar example of getting creative in a sustainable way. Christmas bon-bons are a staple at every festive lunch or dinner table. Often inside store-bought bon-bons are useless plastic toys that serve no real purpose further than a quick laugh and just create more waste each year. Jasmine Dowling crafted these adorable bon bon’s on her blog, which would work perfectly using our tea towels, doubling as a Christmas gift for everyone at the table! Alternatively, ordering 1-2m of your favourite festive fabric (hooray for small order quantities!) and carefully cut and hem to fit. Inside the paper roll you could include some essential oil rollers, home-made mini cookies or handwritten jokes to keep up with tradition. Much more thoughtful and memorable than mini dice or a nail file from typical bon-bons.

 

Festive Placemats with Digital Fabrics tea towels

Really elevate your Christmas table aesthetic by using our designer fabric tea towels as placemats, full of Christmas spirit and more ethical than your typical rubber placemats only to be brought out once per year. We love imagining how a classic Aussie coastal inspired Christmas table would come together with Cass Deller’s Summer Christmas fabric, paired with pretty pastel table decorations.  You can find more Christmas fabric designs from Australian designers that suits your taste in our online Fabric Shop!

It’s easy to feel the festive spirit this time of year and want to give extra for those you cherish. But we prompt you to consider how to translate giving ‘more’ into more thoughtfulness; for our environment, for our impact and creating lasting memories with loved ones.

Time is quickly rolling towards the end of 2022 and our annual break. Digital Fabrics will be closing on Tuesday 20th December 2022 and opening up again Monday 16th January 2023. Please take note of the following order cut-off dates to ensure you don’t miss out on any orders you want to squeeze into the year.

Please note that “Print & Make” orders refer to custom products which require digital printing and then our custom making and finishing services, such as tea towels, cushion covers and scarves. We are almost booked out for our “Print & Make” orders for 2022 so please get in touch with us sooner rather than later if you are needing products by Christmas!

CUT OFF DATES FOR ORDERS BEING PICKED UP
– Friday 5th December – Cut-off date for ‘Print & Make orders pick-up’ (depending on quantity)
– Monday 12th December – Cut-off date for ‘Printing only orders pick-up’
– Tuesday 14th December – Cut-off date for ‘Express Printing only orders pick-up’

– Orders for delivery, submitted after 14th December are more likely to be printed and dispatched in the New Year unless it’s an express order
– Any sample pack orders submitted after 19th December will be dispatched in New Year after January the 16th
– From 7th of December all orders will be dispatched via Express Post
