Amy Jessup – The Designer Project

It’s been so exciting having the delightful designer Amy Jessup, as our current feature artist of The Designer Project and have adored sharing her absolutely divine textile designs. Amy has put together a guest blog for you all, which shares a bit of background info on herself, some behind the scenes of her creative process and as well as what inspires her and her ‘House of Vintage’ collection. Keep on reading to find out more about Amy Jessup and her creative style!

Hi, I’m Amy from Midnight Rise Design. I’m a Textile and Surface Designer based on the beautiful Gold Coast. I love exploring Australia in our van. Life on the road, immersing in our stunning landscape and living simply is most definitely for me.

Oh, and I’m obsessed with my Whippet Luna! My sleepy, sassy gal is in the studio with me daily!

I’m super excited to join the Digital Fabrics team with my collection now available in their fabric store! When I first saw Digital Fabrics, I was instantly drawn to the beautiful idea. Allowing artists, small business owners and creative minds to connect on a platform full of unique designs, high quality fabrics and no limitations. Ahhmazing!

‘Zephyr – Rust’

This collection is inspired by everything and anything vintage. I have always been drawn to vintage homes, swimwear and furniture. I would say my style is a modern twist on vintage concepts. My studio is my favourite room in the house! It’s my inspiration and motivation every day. I truly believe having a space which makes you feel light and excited to take on the day is so important.

Every collection starts with a mood board. My most exciting ideas are sparked when I’m completely relaxed and present. Whether that be when we’ve been traveling around in our van, laying by the beach or it could have been something I’ve seen on my morning walk. I am an organised, list writing, non-clutter kind of gal – Haha! So, Pinterest boards are my go-to (I’m obsessed!). This is one of my latest boards. A mix of colour inspiration, textures, travel pics. Let your mind run wild when creating your next mood board. Anything that feels good, add it!

‘Wild Daisie’

I’m a little bit of a creative mixer, I love all styles! Sometimes I design starting with sketches, other times I’ll dive straight into digital and even explore with watercolour and acrylic paint.

Whichever way I begin a design. The original artwork is scanned into Photoshop or Illustrator. I love that the options are endless and you can work so freely here. Original artwork is fine turned, colour pallets are explored and a seamless pattern is created.

‘House of Vintage’ Textile Collection by Amy Jessup

We couldn’t be more excited to announce that our next featured artist of The Designer Project will be none other than the wonderful designer Amy Jessup!

Amy is a Textile and Surface Designer based on the beautiful Gold Coast and creates her designs under the studio name Midnight Rise Design. Her favourite part of the design process is the over-exciting feeling that you have just thought of something super special and seeing beautiful products come to life in unique, handcrafted designs. How absolutely wonderful!

Her style is a modern twist on vintage concepts. This collection was inspired by everything and anything vintage. She has always been drawn to vintage homes, swimwear and furniture. Her studio is her favourite room in the house! It’s the inspiration and motivation to create every day.

Amy’s ‘House of Vintage’ collection is full of balanced designs using a mixture of different mediums and we’re so excited to have them all available in our Fabric Shop!

‘Mimi’ is such a bubbly, feminine print. It was created with the vision to be raw, created by sketches to keep every wiggle and bump as a personal touch. It features a divine contrast of navy and baby pink with slight shadowing.

‘Mimi’ is such a perfect print for fashion accessories like tote bags or scarves!

‘Posie Citrus’ is a fun, zesty and alternative floral print. Designed in a soft and summery colour palette makes for a versatile design.

We think ‘Posie’ would look absolutely adorable for swimwear!

‘Wild Daisie’ is a warm loving print, the details were inspired by vintage Botanics and bloomed in an Autumn pallet. If you desire to add warmth to your products, Wild Daise is for you.

‘Wild Daisie’ is just the perfect print for any fashion garment, we can picture how beautiful it would look as a long flowing dress.

‘Chic Slither’, where Terrazzo and leopard collide. This balanced design is layered in natural browns. We love this minimal animal print inspired design and think it would work well for both fashion garments as well as home and interior DIY projects!

‘Zephyr’ is a watercolour design that puts a vintage twist on a classic animal print. Make a statement with ‘Zephyr Rust’ with this warm and powerful colour pallet or for more of subtle statement, there’s ‘Zephyr Stone’; full of Soft, elegant and earthy tones.

We think these prints would make the most beautiful bedding or blankets!

COTTON LINEN – 97% Cotton / 3% Linen & 250gsm

Let start simple! Have you seen Turkish Towels or gorgeous Beach Throws? They’re trending Summer essentials and we think our Cotton Linen is the perfect fabric to use.

Cotton Linen is a wonderfully textured natural fibre blend with a durable weave. The fabric has a warm off-white base colour and a matte finish. To use this fabric for a beach throw simply print your custom design and then cut & hem the edges – easy!

COTTON VOILE – 100% Cotton & 75gsm

Want to make your own kaftan or sarong for the warm weather? We think this is another simple project with our Cotton Voile being the perfect fabric for the job!

Cotton Voile is light-weight and super soft and can be compared to muslin, especially after washing as this fabric will only get softer over time! It has an off-white base colour, is semi-sheer and has a matte finish. This fabric is light and airy to wear making it perfect for poolside wraps and ultra-chic kaftans.

Interested in custom beach totes? Look no further! Our Polyester Canvas is just what you need to create a sturdy tote bag!

Our Polyester Canvas is a first choice canvas fabric which is highly durable and softens over time the more you use it. This is a plain weave fabric with a bright white base which ensures vibrant printing results ideal for beach accessories. This fabric is also easy to clean and is water resistant making this the ideal choice for beach bags.

VESNA (ECO-LYCRA) – 85% Recycled Polyester / 15% Spandex & 230gsm

For swimwear garments we recommend checking out our Vesna (Eco Lycra)! It’s an absolute must have fabric to rock an eco-friendly bikini this summer!

Vesna (Eco-Lycra) is an innovative fabric made using recycled plastic bottles! It has an off-white base, a smooth surface and moisture wicking properties. The fabric produces vibrant print results and the surface’s slight sheen will make your artwork pop! The Vesna has an even four-way stretch, a chlorine rating between 4-5 and a UPF rating of 50+ making it the perfect choice for your custom swimwear.

AEROCORP – 100% Polyester & 125gsm

Ever considered creating your own board shorts? We think our Aerocorp fabric is an excellent choice to bring a custom pair of boardies to life!

Aerocorp is a light-weight, microfiber fabric with a smooth and fine texture. It has a bright white base and a matte finish and has excellent colour reproduction when printed. It also provides moisture management and breathability, making it super comfortable to wear – perfect for lounging by the pool.

New Cotton Voile Fabric

As many of you know we’ve been out of stock of a Cotton Voile for sometime (sorry) but at last – we have good news! We are very excited to announce we have added a brand NEW Cotton Voile fabric to our Natural Fabrics Fabric Range! Keep reading for more info below as our new Cotton Voile is distinctly different from our older stock fabric, and we think a more premium product!

Cotton Voile is 100% Cotton and has a maximum printable width of 140cm. This fabric is very similar to muslin, is super-soft and only gets softer after washing! Cotton Voile has an off-white base colour with a touch of warmth, is semi-sheer and has a matte finish. Despite the fabric’s transparency it provides strong colour reproduction when printed and has good colour show-through on the underside of the fabric. When selecting the Cotton Voile please keep in mind that some fading as a result of washing is normal for digital printing on natural fabrics. The fading often gives our natural fabrics a charming and soft ‘worn’ look. Fading can be minimized through the use of cold hand-washing and phosphate free detergent.

Cotton Voile is a lightweight, 70gsm fabric with no stretch and good drape. The open weave nature of the fabric gives it some give and ensures it is ultra-breathable. The Cotton Voile is an excellent choice for scarves, sheer shirts and blouses, summer dresses, kaftans, baby swaddles, baby clothes and light curtains. We’ve popped some inspiration pics below!

Bold Designer Prints – Live Colorful Collection

Back in 2016 we worked with designer Elba Valerde from Live Colorful to create a range of prints for our Fabric Shop which perfectly encapsulated her fun and vibrant style. We thought the change in season made for the perfect time to revisit one of our brightest collections; the Live Colorful Collection, and hopefully inspire some creative DIY projects for the Winter months!

The Live Colorful range has been inspired by the beauty found in nature. Floral and botanic shapes have been photographed, studied and doodled, translating intricate forms into minimal, playful shapes.

Selecting a vibrant yet restricted colour palette was also essential to creating these designs. The use of primary colours, white and hot pink, give this range a carefree feel. The chosen colours paired with simplistic shapes results in a collection that is both timeless and fun, with a touch of Scandi textile flair.

The Live Colorful Collection can be used for cushion covers, tablecloths, table runners, napkins and curtains, just to name a few. Check out our DIY resources for both curtains and bean bag covers using these designs for more inspiration!

Whilst the range was originally designed with homewares in mind we’ve found this bold style of design is perfect for fashion applications as well! We’ve included some images below of similar prints to show you how they can be used in your wardrobe!

Polyester Canvas Fabric

Canvas. You’ve definitely heard of it but what is it used for? We’ve put together an article that gives you some insight into the specific Polyester Canvas fabric that we use; covering its specs, digital printing characteristics and recommended usage! Keep reading to find out why this fabric is one of our most popular choices from our Fabric Range.

Our Polyester Canvas is a premium canvas fabric and is 100% polyester, highly durable and has a maximum printable width of 147cm.

Polyester Canvas is a plain weave fabric with a smooth and consistent texture. It has an optic white base colour ensuring high quality colour reproduction for dye-sublimation printing. This fabric is an excellent choice for designs with bold and dark colours with vibrant and rich printing results.

This heavy duty fabric is 300GSM, water resistant, easy to care for and has no stretch. Our Polyester Canvas is incredibly versatile and can be used for soft furnishings, upholstery, cushion covers, handbags, tote bags, back packs, commercial displays, wall hangings and photo mounting. This commercial grade fabric is a particularly good choice for interiors. We’ve included some examples below of the types of projects that our Polyester Canvas would be perfect for!

Waratah Fabric

Lately on the blog we’ve focused on writing about any new fabrics for printing we’ve introduced to the Digital Fabrics range. Whilst we’ll continue to write these fabric introductions, you can also expect us to write up on some of our old favourites, to help keep you familiar with our complete Fabric Range for printing and make the right selection for your next textile project!

This time we’re brushing up on a long standing Digital Fabrics favourite – Waratah! Our Waratah is a 100% polyester fabric which is highly durable, easy to care for and has a printable width of 147cm.

It is a twill weave, medium weight fabric with a bright white base and slight sheen to its surface. Waratah’s composition and finish provides excellent colour reproduction when printing, making it perfect for designs with vibrant and deep colours!

Waratah fabric is 200 GSM and has minimum stretch meaning it holds its shape very well. This makes Waratah fabric an ideal for homewares applications such as cushion covers, tablecloths and wall hangings, as well as marketing collateral such as banners and signage. We think it’s such a great choice for interiors we’ve chosen Waratah as the standard choice for Digital Fabric’s Custom Cushion Cover Service!

How To: Create a Mirror Repeat using our Online Uploader

Designing abstract textural prints may seem like a challenge, but by selecting the Mirror Repeat Feature when using our Online Uploader, your designs can be taken to the next level with minimal fuss when it comes to repeating your design. Here’s an easy to follow tutorial put together by one of our fabulous interns from 2018 – Emily!

Firstly, start out by creating your own designs and then scan them into your computer. We recommend to scan your artwork at 300dpi and in RGB colour mode.

For our artwork we decided to play around with line-work and contrasting colours to create a high energy zig-zag effect.

Open the design in Adobe Photoshop. It’s at this stage that you can edit your artwork if it requires any tweaks, such as changing the colours or removing / cleaning up elements. Once you are happy with your artwork use the crop tool to crop your design into a rectangular tile.

Check the size of your image by selecting ‘Image’ > ‘Image Size’ from the menu bar in the top-left of your screen. If the dpi of your image is larger than 300, please reduce it to 300dpi. If the dpi of your image is less than 300 you can keep it at this size. Please note we recommend artwork for digital printing to have a dpi of at least 150 for best results when printing onto fabric.

Save the tile as a JPEG so that it is compatible with the Online Uploader.

Next head to our website! The Online Uploader is available either clicking here or by copying & pasting this link: www.digitalfabrics.com.au/custom-fabric into your browser. Use the Online Uploader to upload your design. After the file has loaded you should see it in the fabric preview window.

To the right of the fabric preview window you will see a list of options, including any changes that need to be made to your artwork size as well as the type of ‘repeat’ required for your design. When first uploaded your artwork will always be shown using a ‘full drop’ repeat. Select the ‘mirror repeat’ option. This will reflect your design tile’s edges when placed next to each other, resulting in a seamless repeat pattern of your textured artwork.

Congratulations! You now have a repeat design all set to be printed on the fabric of your choice and applied to any project you can imagine!

Textile Collection Native Whimsy

The end of year break is almost upon us! It’s a time that feels undeniably Australian for many of us, with road trips to the beach, seafood on Christmas Day and the annoying song of a mosquito to keep you up at night. We let this drive our creativity for our latest textile range, and have produced a range of prints inspired by the uniqueness of Australian flora and fauna. We’re excited to introduce our last range of prints for 2018, our Native Whimsy Collection.

Sprinkled Gumnut

We feel like the magic of Christmas invited our inner child to take control of our approach to this range as were drawn to naïve, rounded forms, reminiscent of the images found in children’s books. This sweet illustrative style gave a soft finish to typically jagged plants and bushy animals.

The elements which feature in the Native Whimsy Designs were first drawn with pencil before being brought to life with watercolour paints. The inky textures of watercolours suited the sweet drawing style we has embraced. The hand-painted nature of the designs provides textural balance for otherwise simple motifs.

Sprinkled Gumnut

Native Whimsy pairs big bold colours, such as hot pink and emerald green with plenty of white negative space and earthy neutrals. The result is a set of prints which makes wearing colour, or introducing statement hues into the home, a breeze.

Eucalyptus

The Native Whimsy Collection is a celebration of the wildlife that doesn’t make the regular ‘animal print’ or ‘floral print’ cut. We’d love to know what you think of these designs and how you think they would best be used so get in touch! Prints are available in our Fabric Shop now.

New Fabric Designs for Mother’s Day

We’re launching a new range of prints at Digital Fabrics! It’s been a little while since we brought you our last set of designs and this time we took a different approach to bringing you new prints. Rather than focus on one cohesive collection, we’ve had three artists create three different prints for you just in time for Mother’s Day!

The collection of prints range from flirty to psychedelic to sophisticated, and feature both hand-painted illustration and digital manipulation. With three very different styles represented, we’re sure there’s something for everyone.

If you’re needing fresh ideas on what to spoil mum with this Mother’s Day, we’ve got you covered and have put together a few DIY ideas that we just know you’ll both love. A custom made gift speaks volumes, and is guaranteed to be a winner with mum this year!

Got accessories in mind for a mum who always looks fabulous? How about making a gorgeous and versatile scarf? For something bold or bright you might want to use either our Roxy or Dilly fabrics. If you were thinking of something a little more sheer we would recommend our super soft Chiffon.

If you think home-wares might be better suited, how about a tablecloth?
