Meet the Designer – Julia Reader

Welcoming the talented Julia Reader as our next featured artist in The Designer Project – along with her wonderful fabric collection ‘Flowers & Foliage’!

To coincide with Julia’s fabrics being available in our Fabric Shop, she has also put together a guest blog which shares some background information about the artist herself, the inspiration for the collection and how Julia likes to work creatively. Julia Reader

Hello! My name is Julia and I am the graphic designer and artist behind Julia Reader Creates! I work from a small light-filled studio in Mount Gambier, South Australia in which I sell a small range of creative products from original art and textiles to paper goods. I also teach watercolour from a large, refurbished farm-house table!

I live in the lovely Limestone Coast of South Australia. I am surrounded by nature and it fuels all of my creativity. I have a particular fascination with Australian native flora and fauna, but do love a dahlia too!

Princess Gum flower – design inspiration

My creative process usually starts with a photo that I have taken. My phone is filled with videos and photos of plants and their flowers – it’s a creative library of sorts. This library sits idle until I have a brush in hand, of which I search for the image that talks to me the most. A lot of the time I have no idea what I will create, and I love the spontaneity of that. Some of my best work has arrived from having fun and experimenting. I also have a love for colour and this finds its way into my work naturally.

Watercolour paintings that will transfer to a pattern.

I scan in my watercolour paintings and clean up the elements that I plan to use in my pattern. This can take quite a while to do, and oftentimes I don’t use everything that I paint. I tweak colours and layout until I am happy, and will also apply the pattern to a mock-up file just to see how the pattern will transfer to a product.

I have a large store of watercolour paintings that I sift through every once in a while. I love to re-purpose my artwork and combine different elements and styles, so having this archive of artwork allows me to do that.

As an artist, my aim is to always create what feels aligned. By working in this way, my style remains authentic and will continue to evolve with me over time. Flowers & Foliage is a collection of nature-inspired, abstract prints that are influenced by the bright and wondrous things that Julia finds on her daily walks (she is a collector of leaves, shells, feathers and more). From the colour of Autumn leaves and crab-apples to the shapes of gum and grevillea leaves, these prints are designed with homewares in mind, but work beautifully on scarves, dresses and children’s wares.

Dominique Collins – The Designer Project

It’s been an absolute blast sharing the playful work of Dominique Collins for our current installment of The Designer Project and we hope you’ve fallen as in love with her designs as we have! The Brisbane-based designer creates illustrations and print designs which typically incorporate bright vibrant colours and hand drawn motifs . We’re so thrilled to have Dominique’s ‘Whimsical Nature’ collection available in our Fabric Shop and are keen to see all the inventive ways our fabulous customers will use them! As part of Dominique’s feature the designer has also put together a guest blog which details her typical creative process as well as the things that inspire her! Dominique Collins

Hi everyone! My name is Dominique Collins, everyone calls me Stixy. I am over the moon to be working with Digital Fabrics as part of the Designer Project. I currently own and run Stixylin, a very new illustration and pattern design business, I only started this in May 2022. I live in sunny Brisbane, with my hubby and two energetic children who keep me on toes and push me to create new designs and illustrations each week, with all their little requests (I love it!). I am following my dream as a creative freelancer so I can spend more time with my family while doing what I love.

Workspace + WIP Designs

Recently I took the leap to be a full-time artist/designer/business woman while being a full-time mum of two. I have been passionate about art and creating colourful designs since I was a child living in South Africa. Most of my work is self-taught and I love exploring different mediums, but found Procreate and Adobe Fresco are what I love to use the most (not to mention those apps being easy to travel with as you only need to take your iPad).

I am excited to share my curated collection of pattern designs, creative inspiration and process and give you a sneak peak at my workspace. My work is still new and evolving in ways I could only dream of, with nature and family as my biggest inspiration. My work typically incorporates bright vibrant colours, hand drawn motifs and illustrations.

A little sneak peak into my workspace and how I got my dream space. We build our house two years ago and I designed it with a front office, featuring a great big floor to ceiling window which offers the best natural light. My workspace is generally clean with my iPad, computers and some fabric swatches and maybe a workbook. While creating I am always at my desk or on the couch, even sometimes outside. Depending on my creative mood, you will find me wondering the house with my iPad in hand and a big pot of coffee or tea floating around.

Most of my inspiration comes form being outdoors, either with the kids or while running/cycling. Nature offers such a great inspirational palette of colours and shapes. My curated collection reflects this with rainbows, leaves, snakes and flowers.

My creative process will vary depending on what I am creating. I will often be prompted by something in nature that catches my eye and quickly try to sketch it or take a photo of it to use as a reference. I will sketch my ideas digitally on separate layers so I can adjust and move motifs around before creating the final design. Often I will get creative input from my son or daughter on new ideas and colours or if I am feeling stuck. During my creative process, I will search Pinterest for images to go on my mood-board to help select a colour palette and maybe alternative ideas to help me bring more life to my designs.

An example of my kids helping me, will be when my daughter told me how she imagines snakes gathering in the leaves, their beautiful colours and how they flow from one destination to the next. From this I was able to create Snakes in Leaves Peachy Pink. All hand drawn in procreate with the colours and shapes on the snakes selected by my daughter.

Rainbows Forever was inspired by the rainy days in Brisbane and the beautiful rainbows that followed every storm. Everyone has down days just like the storms, we need to remind ourselves that there is a rainbow after every down/stormy day. The pattern started as a single digital watercolour painting and then I started to play around in procreate to make it into a seamless pattern. This was one of the first patterns I created this year and by far still one of my favourites.

Blooms and Shrooms Moodboard

Blooms and Shrooms was first created as a whimsical illustration and has since been re-worked into a seamless pattern. The motifs are inspired by vibrant mushrooms and my daughters love for pretty little flowers. She helped me select photos for my moodboard from Pinterest to help create the inspiration and guide for creating this pattern. I used a magnolia tree and morel mushroom colour palette to create a bright yet whimsical feel. Once I finished drawing this illustration in procreate, I exported it to Adobe illustrator to create it into a pattern.

Sewing!! I have never tried making a dress with a sewing machine even though I own one. Its about time I took the leap. Definitely a new skill I would love to learn as there are so many great designs on Digital Fabrics. I would really love to create a Rainbow Forever Skirt to brighten my day everyday.

Krystal-Anne Knafl – The Designer Project

It’s been an absolute pleasure starting off this year’s series of The Designer Project with the ultra-talented designer Krystal-Anne Knafl and have adored sharing her funky and colourful textiles designs with you. Krystal has made a range of her designs available as print ready artwork in our Fabric Shop online, which can be printed onto any of our stock fabric base cloths. To provide some more insight into each of Krystal’s designs, the artist herself has put together a guest blog which details her process behind creating her designs as well as what inspired the prints in her collection.

‘Krystal-Anne Knafl’

Hi everyone, Krystal Knafl here from @missappledesigns. I am very excited to announce that some of my designs are now up for sale in the Digital Fabrics fabric shop! Exciting times for all of us, because you get to have some fun creating some amazing products and I get to enjoy hearing about the awesome things you make, which inspires me to design more. I’m looking forward to you all sharing some of the works you were inspired to create. When I was initially designing, I envisioned my designs on curtains, bedding, tea towels, pillows, dresses, skirts, maybe even some cheeky pencil cases and make up bags. There are some great ideas throughout the website and all over the great wide web.

‘Krystals Design Studio’

I thought it would be fun to share my inspiration and process behind my final designs including some photos of my main design space as well as stimulus images. The majority of my works are hand-drawn on my ipad pro using Adobe Fresco and an Apple pencil. I am a big fan of fun, funky and whimsy designs, but I do like to occasionally find balance through use of warm, more neutral tones.
I am a storyteller at heart and most of my works started from either an experience, feeling or observation. I have found that when an experience captures my imagination, I can put more heart into the final product.

Chickens With Hats was inspired by one of my lessons as a Secondary Teacher in 2021 when a student brought in a chicken that he had found on the way to school. This chicken became a big conversation point in the class which lead to me being inspired to explore what this chicken could look like with a hat on (much to the excitement of my students.) Sarah’s Orchard Garden was inspired by my friend Sarah’s growing orchard collection. I was obsessed with the colours and would get even more inspiration every time she added another one to her collection. Crazy Plant Lady was inspired by another friend of mine that developed a deep love/obsession with building a plant collection. She would share all these amazing photos of the plants like they were her own children. There were such beautiful design elements in the plants she shared which inspired me even more.

When designing, I’ll typically search for stimulus through images and particularly look at colours and lines that can work well together. From there, I’ll work towards creating motifs outlines and start experimenting with different colour palettes until I find one that works. Creating motifs can take anywhere from an hour to two weeks depending on how much work and experimenting I need to do.
I do have a ‘dedicated design space’ but I do love designing in spaces where I can relax and stretch my legs. Three of my favourite spaces to design are my couch while listening to music, my bed on a Saturday morning after a big week of work and on occasion down The Strand where I take in some sunshine and sea breeze.

Below is an example of how Sarah’s Orchard Garden can be used. I found a super cute and easy baby doll dress no-pattern dress on Youtube and create this. It prints beautifully on fashion fabrics such as bamboo or fabric but would look incredible on some bedding fabrics. As a fan of fresh and delicious produce, I was inspired to create Summer Salad. A super cute and colourful design that brings out the natural fun and beauty of vegetables which would look amazing as a tote bag, tea towel or even some funky cushions! Or why not make a statement in the kitchen and create a fun apron. This print can also be ordered here in a wide variety of fabrics to meet your sewing needs.

Summer DIY Dress from Unique Designer Fabric!

Recently, one of our wonderful team members Ella, took on the project of creating the most stunning party dress out of our newest natural fabric, Poppy!

Ella is our Studio & Production assistant here at Digital Fabrics and also works very closely with The Designer Project. Constantly seeing all of the amazing designs from our Aussie Designers, she decided to feature one of the prints for her dress. Ella has put together a blog post for you all, showcasing the behind the scenes of her latest project as well as her thought process and why she was inspired by The Designer Project.

When I first found out we would be stocking our new Poppy fabric, I knew I just had to make something from it. Organic Cotton Sateen…? Yes please!

I love to work on my own textile designs for my projects but this time, I decided to have a little scroll through our Fabric Shop online. Through working closely with The Designer Project designers, seeing all of their amazing collections in our Fabric Shop and knowing all the love that goes into them, I knew I wanted to order some prints to support our local artists for my next project.

Once I saw the design ‘Maggie May’ by Madeline Hawkins, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

I then went on a hunt for the perfect dress pattern to match the vibes of the design. I came across DIY Daisy on Instagram and scrolled through her website and discovered her ‘Gathered Rectangle Dress’ tutorial.

I don’t tend to use patterns as I love to make up custom pieces that are perfected to my body shape, or just using clothes that I currently own and loved the shape and fit of to base my new garment on. For this project though, I wanted to find a pattern to work with so that none of this gorgeous custom fabric went to waste.

I love the shape and fit of Daisy’s dress, and how easy it was to put together! I ended up making a mini dress version to create a more ‘party dress’ vibe though. I ended up ordering 2 metres of Madeline’s print, but only need about 1 metre of fabric to create the dress (I’m a size 8/10 or S/M for reference)

Since I had another metre spare and a few off-cuts, I also used Daisy’s ‘Trapezoid Skirt’ tutorial to create another wonderful piece with the ‘Maggie May’ print and also a little bandana for my cat Luna (which she sadly did not want to wear for photos) !

Poppy was such a great fabric to work it, it was smooth and easy to sew and to gather as well! The print also turned out so beautifully on the fabric and the sateen sheen paired perfectly with the style of the design. It also happens to wash super well, even after a few washes it still looks lovely and bright!

The dress feels so special to me, knowing I’ve helped support one of our Australian Designers.

Working at Digital Fabrics, I see so many wonderful prints come through our studio doors and am always wondering what amazing projects people are working on and what the fabric will be turned into. It’s always a pleasure working on my own projects using custom fabrics from my place of work. I feel very lucky being able to see the behind the scenes of it all as well as being able to create the finished piece.

‘Sink and Sun’ Textile Collection by Brianna Pawlik

It’s come that time again to introduce our newest feature artist in The Designer Project and we are so excited to announce that the amazing Brianna Pawlik will be our designer for the month of July!

Brianna finds wonder and inspiration from the ocean and a lifestyle growing up on the east coast of Australia. The “Sink and Sun” print collection is inspired by coastal treasures and remnants from holiday roaming. Think vintage finds like sailing hooks and sinks, bountiful sunshine, seashell collections and playful waves. Soft pink and blue, a muted navy, yellow, tan, and rustic red runs through the patterns. The retro muted colour palette contrasts with old school, bold ink strokes to take you back to easy times, slower days, and getaway good vibes.

Each of Brianna’s designs can be printed onto any of our fabrics, which means you can order custom designer fabric that’s tailored to you. Keep reading to find out more about Brianna Pawlik’s beautiful collection!

The ‘Gypsy Skull’ print is all things kitsch and boho. Inspired by bohemian island gems. The bold hand drawn motifs pop out against the soft pink background and golden sand spots, to create a simple yet kitschy boho feel.

We think ‘Gypsy Skull’ would work super well as some beach towels or even throw blankets!

The ‘Ocean Folk’ print features a retro hand drawn sun and rope frame. Inspired by ocean roaming from sun up to sun down. The muted retro inspired colour palette of soft yellow, pink and blue against the tan background, is reminiscent of warm, hazy coastal holidays.

‘Ocean Folk’ would be so amazing as some lovely home projects for your kid’s bedroom such as curtains or cushions!

The ‘Compass Coins’ print is inspired by holiday roaming for lost coastal treasures and sea remnants. It features hand drawn vintage compasses and wondering eyes. The muted retro inspired colour palette is reminiscent of slow hazy coastal getaways.

‘Compass Coins’ is the perfect print for the sweetest kids’ bed sheets or even some throw blankets!

‘Flower Shields’ is a fresh coastal inspired print featuring the sunken ship and sunrise shields and retro flower motifs. The playful muted colour palette contrasts with the old school, bold ink strokes for that perfect combination of retro, kitsch, and coastal vibes.

The ‘Flower Shields’ design would work great for some fashion accessories like tote bags or even some pillow cases!

‘Hook Sun Sink’ is a simple, understated print. Featuring the hand drawn old school sailing hooks, retro suns, and water droplets in a tan colour on a fresh white background.

We think the ‘Hook Sun Sink’ print would be absolutely perfect for some cute kidswear such as some little t-shirts or tights!

The ‘Peace Suns’ print is all about sunshine and good vibes. Dominated by simple lines and marks to create the Ying yang and peace sign suns that ooze rays of warmth and goodness. The navy and white is a simple, coastal and gender-neutral colourway to suit a range of textile products for yourself or home.

‘Peace Suns’ is another adorable print that we think would work great for some kid’s clothes, a cute matching set perhaps!

‘Britney Munday’

Hello all!

I am Britney, the designer behind B.A. Munday Designs and I am thrilled to be a part of Digital Fabric’s Designer Project. I am currently based in the Gippsland area of Victoria but originated from the United States. One thing that has stayed constant in my life is living in rural communities that have a love for simplicity and nature.

As a child I was very shy and never was one to draw attention to myself; art was the exception. After moving to Australia, I put on hold any artistic endeavours and focused on living life, getting married and having kids. There then came a time when I had been a mom for so long, I forgot what I even liked anymore. That’s when Surface Pattern Design entered my life. I have spent the last 2 years cultivating my artistic style, connecting with other artists, and loving the idea of bringing beauty to the world with my designs.

I recently found out I have ADHD which means my style is always flowing and adapting to whatever my brain is passionate about in that moment. I usually stick to florals but will sometimes throw in a geometric or abstract design just for kicks. The same goes for the medium I use to create the artwork for the patterns. Sometimes I draw solely on the computer, other times its pencils, pens, and painting. I love to learn and try new things and designing affords me that opportunity every day. The result is a style that is true to who I am; colourful, passionate and a bit all over the joint.

There are no limits to what I can be inspired by. Inspiration, for me, often comes in the form of listening to podcasts, reading, movies, music and of course Pinterest. Art seems to be an embodiment of all the things passing through my brain and being absorbed into my heart. My desire to keep progressing and creating is motivated by the stories of people who have built their lives by following their passions.

At the end of the day, I absolutely love what I get to do. Not only do I get to display my inner joy on fabric, I get to communicate with people from all over that only want me to succeed. Having that kind of support is new to me, but it makes a world of difference. Textile Collection Ella

It’s that time again! Our design team has been busy at work to deliver you a brand new range of elegant designs. We’ve chosen to create seasonal feeling prints, contrasting in style to our previous floral filled collection, and guaranteed to inspire. Introducing our new Ella Collection, which is available now in our Fabric Shop now!

For this collection we were inspired by continuous line drawings which sparked the creative process of creating gorgeous, minimal designs. We took inspiration from the Divine Feminine, researching the female form, facial features and bohemian iconography. Picasso and artist Kris Trappeniers were also used as a reference to help guide the illustrative style of the collection. We then began to hand-draw a range of illustrations, experimenting with different pencils and markers before settling on the use of a black fine-line marker, to create a universal look to all the designs.

Once we had a series of illustrations, we selected the drawings we wanted to use for the designs and scanned them for further development. Both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop were used to clean the hand-drawn artwork and experiment with scale and layout.

Different colours and tones were tested during the creative process for each design. Before we settled on a soft, earthy colour palette to compliment the feminine nature and simple elements of the collection. The warm colours, inspired by nature, create a harmonious flow throughout the range. For one of the designs we found two different colourways worked particularly well, and decided to feature both of them in the final collection.

The prints include various scales throughout the collection which we think are perfectly suited to fashion applications. Textile Collection Prairie

Spring is finally in bloom! As we have officially headed into the warmer seasons, we’re celebrating with our brand new Prairie Collection. Packed full of beautiful floral designs, it’s sure to inspire some DIY projects for Spring!

We’ve drawn our inspiration from the beauty of nature’s botanics for this collection, showcasing a range of dainty floral designs. The process began by hand-drawing and painting individual floral elements, which were then scanned and arranged into a variety of designs using Photoshop. A small scale was chosen for each of the designs to create a range of florals that were delicate and pretty. To ensure the collection was versatile we wanted to use a diverse colour palette. Cool and warm hues are used through the range which has a distinctly retro feel.

Our first design of the collection is Sweet Pea. It features soft, floral elements with an adornment of pea pods scattered throughout the design. The cool-toned colour palette gives this print a whimsical touch.

Next up we have Ginger Snap! This delightfully warm floral print is bursting with a bold, earthy glow. The detailed watercolour design and homely colour palette gives this print an inviting vintage feel.

Finally we have Posy! Our gorgeous Posy print features a mix of classic florals and soft watercolours, to create a design that is charmingly familiar.

We think the designs can be used for a variety of products and garments such as blouses, skirts, swimwear and bedding. The bright yet soft colours of the designs, compliment the season perfectly and will keep you inspired with whatever you choose to create with them. We’ve included some reference imagery to showcase the many ways you could use these designs this Spring!

Textile Collection Adriatic

August is almost over which means Spring is upon us – and we’ve got longer days and warmer weather on the brain! What better way to get excited for the change of season than launching a brand new collection that celebrates salty hair and sun-kissed skin. Better schedule some time off because we’re taking you on a trip with our Adriatic Collection!

We were inspired by Ditsy prints for this collection and wanted to reinterpret the style with a more geometric and minimal approach rather than using pretty floral motifs. The process began by hand drawing and painting simple shapes and lines at a really small scale.

The graphic style of the elements which began to emerge pushed this collection into the space of fashion, particularly beachwear. The small scale of the motifs were perfectly suited to the intimate sizing of swimwear garments and has shaped the narrative behind this collection.

We chose to work with a minimal colour palette which compliments both the refined designs chosen as well as the laid back simplicity of being on vacation. Crisp whites are as much of a focus in this collection as the playful reworking of primary colours. The Adriatic Collection whisks you away with its nods to nautical design and use of timeless colour pairings evoking the sun and sea. We’ve included some reference imagery below to help get those creative juices flowing!
